Building Caretaker (Canada Summer Jobs Position)

Overview:
Temple Emanu-El is a vibrant and creative Reform congregation of approximately 325 families in Toronto. We are currently seeking a temporary Building Caretaker through the Canada Summer Jobs program.

Eligibility Requirements (as per the Canada Summer Jobs program):
To be eligible for this position, applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person with refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) and be legally entitled to work in Canada

This position is funded by the Government of Canada and is open to qualified applicants from all backgrounds. Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform general building maintenance
  • Support custodial staff (cleaning common areas, garbage removal, restocking supplies)
  • Complete room setups and takedowns for programs, services, and events
  • Move furniture as needed for events and program requirements
  • Organize and maintain storage areas
  • Water and care for indoor and outdoor plants
  • Maintain outdoor areas (light landscaping, tidying entrances, seasonal upkeep)
  • Monitor the facility to ensure safety, cleanliness, and proper functioning
  • Report maintenance issues or safety concerns to staff
  • Assist with special projects as needed
  • Liaise with external building service providers (e.g., cleaners, contractors, maintenance vendors) as needed

Qualifications

  • Comfortable with physical tasks, including lifting and moving furniture
  • Ability to use basic tools and equipment (or willingness to learn)
  • Strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to interact with service providers and staff
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Previous caretaking, maintenance, or custodial experience is an asset, but not required

 

Remuneration and Work Details:

  • $18 per hour
  • 30 hours per week
  • Start date: May 4, 2026
  • Duration: 12 weeks
  • This position requires on-site work at Temple Emanu-El
