In Celebration of our 160th Anniversary and
in Commemoration of Rabbi Plaut’s Fifth Yahrtzeit
Holy Blossom Temple is pleased to welcome
Dr. Gary P. Zola as our Scholar-in-Residence.
Saturday evening, February 11, 2017

Rabbi Gary P. Zola is the Executive Director of The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and the Edward M. Ackerman Family Distinguished Professor of the American Jewish Experience & Reform Jewish History at The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Shabbat Mincha and Havdalah Service
5 pm
Dr. Zola will give the sermon entitled, “PROFILES IN CANADIAN JEWISH COURAGE.”
The history of Jewish life in Canada is written by “Jewish giants” whose biographies shed significant light, not only on general Canadian history, but also on the lofty meaning of
the North American Jewish experience. Among these “Jewish giants” is our own Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut, whose fifth Yahrtzeit will be observed.
Dinner, Presentation of The Eisendrath Papers, and Address by Dr. Zola
6:30 pm
When Jacob’s Tower was being cleared out for restoration, an old cardboard box was found to contain the hand-written manuscripts of Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath’s sermons from 1929 – 1943. This treasure trove has been studied by Temple Archivists, Michael Cole and Howard Roger. Their labour of love can be found here: http://holyblossom.org/2012/07/the-lost-and-found-sermons-of-rabbi-maurice-eisendrath/
Now it is time to share the 189 sermons with the greater Jewish world. Our Temple Archivists will present this gift to Dr. Zola so the priceless manuscripts can be further studied and protected by scholars of The American Jewish Archives.

Dr. Zola will share “FASCINATING DOCUMENTS FROM THE AMERICAN JEWISH
ARCHIVES.”
The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives is the world’s largest catalogued collection of documentary evidence on the history of North American Jewry. It is an
archival collection composed of more than 20 million individual records. Known as an absolutely captivating teacher, Dr. Zola will give a multimedia lecture highlighting an array of the AJA’s most fascinating and historically significant documents.

All are welcome for services at 5 pm.
For dinner and lecture, registration is required, please click on this link for registration information: http://holyblossom.org/event/drzola/
