Every year we read the "Scroll of Esther" or the "Megillah" on the holiday of Purim. It is a tale of political intrigue, personal vengeance and brilliant strategy. In 2010 Laya Crust was commissioned to scribe and illuminate a Megillah. She will speak about the orthodox attitude to women doing sofrut for a Megillah, the tradition of illuminated Megillot, and the story behind some of the extremely unique imagery she used. Laya will bring a full sized (10 1/2 feet long) copy of the Megillah for viewing. Megillot will be available for purchase.

Laya Crust is a Toronto based Judaica artist. Inspired by Torah, text and nature, Laya's art is exhibited in museums, libraries, organizations and private collections throughout the world. She worked with renowned stained glass artist Sarah Hall on award winning windows in New York, has designed and made mosaic wall pieces, explored the stories of famous figures through her art, and created hundreds of ketubot for private clients. Laya is currently working on a book of Haftarah illustration and commentary. Laya also gives talks on a variety of art and Judaic related subjects. She and her husband have 6 children and 4 grandchildren.
