From Jerusalem to Toronto, Israel’s 78th Independence Day Celebrates Resilience
Israel ushered in its 78th Independence Day with the traditional torch lighting ceremony at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl, held against the backdrop of ceasefires with Iran and Lebanon. The event drew dignitaries and hundreds of flag-waving spectators, marking the return of a live audience for the first time since 2023. This year’s theme was Forces of Renewal.
Here at home, community celebrations were held across Toronto. UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, Mizrachi Canada, and the JCC jointly hosted an evening of remembrance and celebration featuring a heartfelt ceremony, musical performances, and community unity. Flag raisings also took place at Toronto City Hall and Vaughan City Hall, in addition to a ceremony hosted at Ontario’s Queens Park.
Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics reported the population now stands strong at 10.244 million, an increase of 1.4 percent or about 146,000 people. Of the total population, 76 percent are Jews and others, 21.1 percent are Arabs and 2.9 percent are foreigners.
