Federal Government Responds with Immediate Funding

Earlier today, the Government of Canada announced a $10 million immediate investment toward Jewish community security through the Canada Community Security Program (CCSP). This funding will help Jewish community organizations enhance the security of many gathering spaces, including schools, daycares, overnight camps, and places of worship. Click here for the full news release.

This funding announcement comes less than a week after two Toronto-area synagogues were struck with gunfire. The first incident occurred late in the evening on Friday, March 6, at Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT) on Clark Avenue in Thornhill. About 30 minutes later, just after midnight on Saturday, March 7, shots were fired at Shaarei Shomayim on Glencairn Avenue in North York. These incidents come just days after another North York synagogue, Temple Emanu-El, was also targeted during Purim. No injuries were reported, and police are actively investigating.

UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, the Jewish Security Network (JSN), and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) have been proactively responding to the latest rise in antisemitic violence in our city. Click below to learn more about UJA’s response:
