Amid Broader Rise in Extremism, Two Locations of Jewish-Owned Bakery Targeted in Suspected Hate-Motivated Attacks

Toronto police are investigating after two locations of Jewish-owned Kiva’s Bagel Bakery were targeted in separate incidents Sunday morning. One location was struck by gunfire, while another had a window broken. No physical injuries were reported, and police have released an image of an SUV they believe is connected to both incidents. The Jewish Security Network (JSN) remains in close contact with law enforcement and community partners as the investigation continues.

“Jewish Torontonians should not have to wonder whether the places where we gather openly and proudly will be the next targets of violence or intimidation,” said Adam Minsky, president and CEO of UJA Federation. He added that the community is grateful for the Toronto Police’s swift response and for bringing both the Hate Crime Unit and Gun and Gang Task Force into the investigation.

Noah Shack, CEO for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), UJA’s advocacy agency, said the attacks "come amid a broader rise in violent extremism across Canada and other Western democracies—a toxic brew of antizionist rhetoric, local criminal elements, Iranian-backed proxies, and ISIS-inspired terrorism. Our leaders must be unequivocal: nothing justifies attacks on Canadians."
