The Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand (JJHH, also known as Chevrah Kadisha), the largest Jewish welfare organization in Africa, supports almost a quarter of Johannesburg’s Jewish community – more than 11,000 people. Donations fund 70% of its R315M ($17M) annual budget, providing food, rent, education, and healthcare. It also houses nearly 1,000 residents in aged-care homes, disability centres, and childcare facilities. From cradle to grave, no Jew is ever left behind.
As an expat, you likely know someone touched by JJHH – through a dignified burial, residential care or help during a difficult time.
Despite generous local support, demand and the costs of food, healthcare and utilities continue to rise, while:
These challenges constrain local fundraising, so United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto (UJA) and Jewish Federations of Canada – UIA (JFC-UIA) are calling on the South African community here in Canada for help. UJA is raising funds for JFC-UIA toward its initiatives with JJHH’s (Chevrah Kadisha) One Tribe Campaign.
In accordance with the Income Tax Act and Canada Revenue Agency guidelines, I confirm that no benefit of any kind has been provided to me, or to anyone designated by me, as a result of this donation. I consent to UJA releasing my name and donation amount to JFC-UIA, and JFC-UIA sharing that information with JJHH (Chevrah Kadisha).
I also acknowledge that donations made to UJA and recommended for JJHH’s (Chevrah Kadisha) One Tribe Campaign will be provided to JFC-UIA, recommended for its approved initiatives. To cover internal costs, there is a 2% JFC-UIA internally allocated charge for these donations. UJA will issue a tax receipt to donors for the full value of the donation.
