Update: Shooting at Bais Chaya Mushka Elementary School

This morning at around 5 AM, two attackers fired gunshots at Bais Chaya Mushka Elementary School, at Dufferin and Finch. We are grateful that no one was injured during this heinous act of hate, and we extend our steadfast support to the staff, students, and families of Bais Chaya Mushka.

This was a brazen and deliberate attempt to intimidate our community. But in the face of antisemitism, our Jewish community is strong and resilient. We will continue to do what we have always done: live publicly and proudly as Jews.

Since this morning, UJA Community Security has taken immediate action in response:

  • We have been in constant contact with Toronto Police Service to ensure close coordination with law enforcement. The attackers were caught on camera and police are investigating. We have been assured that police are strengthening their presence in Jewish neighbourhoods and around Jewish institutions to keep our community safe.
  • Together with the police, we have been in contact with our partner day schools to ensure they respond with a heightened and healthy sense of vigilance. We are bringing together all heads of school to brief them on proactive security measures for their institutions.

We will inform the community of any critical information that police share with us. In this difficult moment, we want to remind you that UJA Community Security maintains a 24/7 hotline for reporting antisemitic incidents: 416-635-5600. We encourage you to always report incidents you experience, so we can follow up. In an emergency, always call 911 first.

Tonight is the beginning of Lag BaOmer. This holiday reminds us that, even as we exercise enhanced vigilance, our unity and pride as Jews is at the core of our strength. We must never cower or retreat from Jewish life—and we will never let antisemites stop us from living as who we are.

We wish all who are celebrating a Happy Lag BaOmer.

Sincerely,
UJA Community Security
