In separate incidents, a kosher restaurant and caterer was targeted for antisemitic graffiti and vandalism. The first incident took place at La Briut's location on Doncaster Avenue in Markham, which was broken into at approximately 2:40 AM on January 10th. The second incident occurred overnight, last night, at La Briut on Alness Road in North York. While no one was physically harmed, property damage is extensive.
The Jewish Security Network (JSN) has been on site to gather information, provide support to La Briut, and liaise with police as they investigate. Today, York Regional Police released photos of the suspects in the Doncaster Avenue incident, seeking the public's assistance to identify the perpetrators.
As we continue to assist La Briut, we remind the community of the importance of healthy vigilance and rapidly reporting any suspicious activity, hate crimes, or security concerns. Community institutions and identifiably Jewish businesses are advised to ensure security measures are in place, up-to-date and fully operating—inclusive of door locks, alarm systems, panic buttons, and security cameras. Please reach out to the JSN if you require any security advice or assistance.
Should you witness a crime or suspicious activity, please contact police without delay. When safe, your second call should be to the JSN's 24/7 hotline at 416-635-5600.
