Canadians Volunteer in Israel Through Masa

This fall, Masa Canada was proud to bring the first month-long national delegation of Canadian volunteers to Israel.

The delegation featured a select group of young professionals and represented a cross-section of the Canadian Jewish community: from ages 22 to late 40s; from Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Windsor; spanning the religious spectrum from Modern Orthodox to unaffiliated.

They each stopped their lives and busy careers to dedicate a full month to experiencing Israel and making a real impact. They spent three weeks in Tel Aviv and one in our partner city of Eilat-Eilot, volunteering in community service: preparing meals for local children and evacuees; packaging food for housebound seniors; helping out at Kibbutz Ketura; and volunteering with Youth Futures, a program that helps mentor at-risk students and which was first started in Eilat, supported by UJA. Participants had the chance to mingle with locals, explore the country, and make connections with our partnership team in Eilat-Eilot.

The trip was also a deeply emotional experience, as the delegation heard the courageous testimony of Dikla and Neev, mother and sister of Ben Mizrachi, a 22-year-old beloved member of the Vancouver Jewish community who was murdered at the Nova festival on October 7th.

They also met with displaced families from both the north and the south of the country—forced to evacuate away from the war on both fronts.

They landed back in Canada with a deeper connection to the people of Israel and their own Jewish identities, forever impacted by their experiences.
