The following update is being shared on behalf of the Jewish Security Network.
As we mark this painful day, may the memory of all who were murdered on October 7th be for a blessing. May the survivors and their families know healing. And may every hostage be returned to their families without further delay.
JEWISH SECURITY NETWORK UPDATE: OCTOBER 7TH ANNIVERSARY
Today, community members in Greater Toronto and around the world will gather to mark the one-year anniversary of the horrific Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023.
As we do so, our collective security is top-of-mind. We are writing to alert community members of the following:
- We currently have no information to suggest a specific or imminent threat to our Greater Toronto Jewish community.
- As a precautionary measure, police have confirmed they have increased their visible presence throughout our Jewish community at this time. See here for more details from Toronto Police Service and York Regional Police.
- This solemn anniversary comes at a time of increased antisemitism and extremism on a global level, as well as ongoing threats to Israel and the Jewish people from Iran and its terror proxies. In light of this, healthy vigilance and heightened awareness is warranted.
- We encourage community members to be particularly attentive to their surroundings, especially when participating in community activities. Any suspicious behaviour or incidents should be reported without delay, be it to security staff on-site or to police. In an emergency, always call 911 first. When safe, please contact the Jewish Security Network at 416-635-5600.
- The Jewish Security Network has been working closely with UJA and Toronto Police in preparation for this evening’s October 7th memorial event at UJA’s Sherman Campus. Robust security measures will be in place. If you are attending the program, we ask that you give yourself adequate travel time, taking into account there will be a sizeable crowd and security checks will be conducted.
- We encourage all community members to avoid ongoing anti-Israel protests in Greater Toronto and refrain from engaging hateful protestors, be it in person or online. As well, please avoid spreading security rumours or unverified information on social media, which can have serious, unintended consequences.
Thank you for your vigilance and support for our collective security. We are continuing to monitor the threat environment, in close partnership with police, and will keep our community informed of key updates.
Sincerely,
The Jewish Security Network
