October 7 Marking One Year

October 7 Marking One year

On October 7th, 2023, everything changed for the Jewish people. Join UJA Federation, our partners, and our allies as we come together, as one united community, to mark this dark day. Together, we will cherish the memory of those who were murdered. Reaffirm our solidarity with the hostages and their families. And honour the resilience of the wounded and all who survived the deadliest attack on Jewish life since the Holocaust.

October 7th Memorial Event FAQ

Where is the October 7th memorial event taking place?

The event will take place at Sherman Campus at 4600 Bathurst St, North York, ON M2R 3V3.

Is there a rain date?

This event will happen rain or shine. Please dress accordingly.

How do I get there?

You can take public transportation or use a ride-sharing app. There will be no parking available. Please note that there will be some road closures in the area, so give yourself plenty of time, regardless of your method of transportation. Please be respectful of parking signs and neighbourhood driveways.

Who organized this event?

October 7th: Marking One Year is a community event hosted in partnership by UJA and dozens of other community organizations.

Can I bring my children to the event?

Due to the nature of the event and some graphic footage, we recommend leaving younger children at home. Please use your best discretion.

Is this event only for members of the Jewish community?

Absolutely not! We are pleased to welcome allies from various cultural and faith communities to join us in marking one year since October 7th. Many Canadians who are not Jewish find the rise in antisemitism and anti-Zionism atrocious and will support our community—including Israel—during this challenging time.

Is this event accessible for those with disabilities?

For accessibility information related to parking and/or seating at the event, please contact Lisa Levstein at llevstein@ujafed.org before October 6th at 4:00PM, or register here.

We will also have ASL interpretation available for those who need it.

Are pets allowed?

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed due to this event taking place in the evening, safety concerns, etc.

Do I need to download the app?

While the app is not required to participate in the event, it is highly recommended to enhance your event experience. The app will allow users to follow along with the program, view song lyrics, speaker information, and contribute their thoughts by lighting a candle or writing a reflection.

Will there be an opportunity to do Mincha/Ma'ariv while on Sherman Campus?

Yes, we will be offering a Mincha/Ma'ariv service for those interested. Please contact Rabbi Lipner for more information at rlipner@ujafed.org.

What security measures are in place?

In co-ordination with police, we have developed a detailed security plan to ensure every community member can feel safe when attending this event. Some security measures will not be visible for operational reasons. We will have a combined security presence that includes police, private security personnel, trained volunteers, as well as lane closures and fencing. We'll be closely monitoring the campus’s surroundings throughout the entire event, using a combination of on-the-ground personnel and technology to rapidly identify and respond to any issues of concern.

What do I do if I encounter anti-Israel protestors?

Ignore them. Anti-Israel activists have every interest in falsely portraying the pro-Israel movement as extreme—and the way to do that is to provoke us into on-camera confrontations. We must refuse to be baited or intimidated. This event is about uniting our community, supporting Israelis, and honouring those who lost their lives on October 7th.

Will action be taken against hateful protestors?

UJA is consulting with some of the top lawyers in our community to explore a range of legal options to address anti-Israel protestors. At the same time, we are working with and relying on Toronto Police to enforce the law and safeguard our community.

What happens if there is an emergency situation during the event?

In the case of an emergency, the event will be stopped immediately, and UJA will provide next steps on how to proceed.

How much is registration?

Registration is free but required. For security purposes, it’s important that we know how many people are coming and who they are.

What confirmation do I need for this event?

You will have received email confirmation or a QR code prior to the event. Valid ID will also be required to confirm your identity. In the case that you have not received a QR code or email confirmation, please notify a staff member at registration.

I missed advanced registration. Can I still come?

Yes. However, if you register after October 6th, you will not be sent a QR code or confirmation email, which acts as your entrance confirmation. Please look for the sign at registration on site that says, “Registration.”

I am having difficulty registering. What should I do?

If you are having issues, please contact us at info@jewishtoronto.com.
