Rabbi Appel creates and leads Clal’s city-wide and graduate training programs in innovation and Jewish entrepreneurship. The founder of Jewish community start-up “Bina Community Circles,” Rabbi Appel has been bringing her entrepreneurial lens to congregational and organizational settings for over a decade, in both the United States and Canada. Rabbi Appel most recently led a major four-year design thinking process at Hillel at the University of Toronto, as part of the Organizational Design Lab of Hillel International. She previously served as Assistant Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom and of Congregation Dorshei Emet in Montreal. A master educator, she has also trained in community organizing, diversity and inclusion, and relational engagement. Rabbi Appel holds a B.A. from Harvard University and an M.A. in Jewish Studies and Rabbinic Ordination from Hebrew College, and lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Tema works in partnership with Jewish professionals, educators, clergy and lay leaders to help them develop the skills and tools they need to fully embrace interfaith couples and families. Before joining 18Doors, she was a synagogue professional, most recently at Holy Blossom Temple and Congregation Darchei Noam.. As a diversity advocate, writer, and educator, Tema uses her skills and passion to advance conversations and change around inclusion in the Jewish community. She has worked with Jewish organizations across North America, including conducting training for many synagogues, JCRCs and Federations. Tema is, herself, a Toronto native who grew up in an interfaith family, whose passion for engaging interfaith families has guided her Jewish professional career.
