Youth Advisor (Part-time Role)
Temple Har Zion (THZ) is a vibrant and inclusive Jewish institution committed to fostering a sense of community, promoting spiritual growth, and engaging individuals of all backgrounds. Temple Kol Ami is a welcoming and inclusive Jewish community that provides a warm, caring, and nurturing place for people to meet and connect. We are currently seeking an organized, passionate, and experienced Youth Advisor to serve the youth and teens of both congregations. This position reports directly to the Directors of Education of both Temple Har Zion & Temple Kol Ami.
The Youth Advisor will act as a positive Jewish Role Model who provides leadership, guidance, and support to Har Zion & Kol Ami’s youth and programs. The primary function of this role is to assist in the planning and running of youth activities, encouraging active participation and involvement in the Temple communities in ways that are meaningful and fun. This role requires outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, and a collaborative and team-oriented approach. The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to efficiently manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Youth Engagement & Programming
- Senior Youth Group (Grades 9-12): Guide, facilitate, and motivate Temple Youth Group (TYG) members to develop and run their own social, educational, religious, social action, and spiritual activities (4-6 programs at minimum)
- Junior Youth Group (Grades 6-8): Plan and schedule Junior Youth Group (JYG) programs to take place throughout the year (3-4 programs at minimum)
- Teen Leadership Oversight: Meet regularly with the TYG members and leadership to plan programs and activities, arrange for representatives from TYG to attend Temple Board of Director meetings, attend TYG programs to support and facilitate what the youth have planned
- Regional Participation: Coordinate youth participation in their respective Temple-wide events, programs, and services
- Community Engagement: Establish open communication with NFTY Central Canada Regional Mentor to encourage participation in regional events and travel with the youth group to these functions
Administration & Logistics
- Communications: Oversee and monitor all communications going out from both youth groups, ensuring appropriateness, which includes member emails, social media, phone chains/calls, Temple newsletters, and eBlast publications
- Presence & Oversight: Be the first to arrive and last to leave any youth group related activity and to supervise the safety and well-being of the youth that are present and the facility being used, arrange for additional adult supervision/volunteers as needed
- Membership: Maintain the membership roster and the list of all teenagers within the congregations
- Financial Management: Oversee youth group finances in conjunction with the Executive Director of Temple Har Zion; maintain records and keep expenditures within budget
- Synagogue Partnership: Communicate regularly with the lay leadership, Directors of Education, and the clergy, prepare a summary of youth groups happenings to send to the Board of Directors in advance of Board Meetings
- Calendar & Website: Place all youth group events on the Temple calendars through communication with the office
- Community Engagement: Send regular updates to partner agencies regarding youth activities, including Reform Jewish Communities of Canada (RJCC), UJA Teen Engagement, and URJ Camp George
Qualifications
- Community Building Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills, ability to engage comfortably and sensitively with youth and teens, ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently with initiative.
- Technical Skills: Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, Constant Contact, and CRM systems (preferably ShulCloud) or the ability to learn new software.
- Communication Skills: Outstanding communication skills, capable of effectively conveying messages across various mediums and platforms.
- Organizational Skills: Strong problem-solving skills, organizational abilities, and prioritization skills.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to notice and accurately process the small but important aspects of tasks, assignments, or projects.
- Education: Post-secondary education in a relevant field.
- Experience: At least three (3) years of relevant work experience; prior experience working in the Jewish community, experiential education, and/or camp are considered an asset.

Additional Information
- This is a part-time, in-person, contract position to commence as soon as possible.
- Salary range is $5000 - $7000 annually commensurate with experience
