Temple Sinai is seeking to hire a full-time Staff Accountant to support the accounting department. This position reports to the Director of Finance and works in close collaboration with the Executive Director and other Temple administrative staff to support timely and accurate financial reporting. The Staff Accountant is responsible for accounts receivable, accounts payable, HST, membership renewal, and cemetery plot administration. Regular interaction with Temple members on these matters is a key component of the position.
Accountabilities / Functional Duties
Revenues and Accounts Receivable:
- Processing payments and refunds and preparation of all bank deposits
- Reconciliation of monthly deposits along with identification of outstanding deposits and/or any other reconciling items
- Quarterly reconciliation of school enrolment to revenue
- Quarterly review of clearing account reconciliations
- Development and maintenance of systematic collection process of outstanding receivables including preparation and issuance of statements as required and collection calls
Accounts Payable:
- Preparation and/or processing of supplier invoices, cheque requisitions, and transfer requests, ensuring they have been correctly coded and appropriately signed and approved.
- Work with Director of Finance to transition to a more digitized AP process, including development of policies, procedures and internal controls.
- Monthly reconciliation of credit card statements
- Monthly reconciliation of AP subledger to GL
- Quarterly HST Reconciliation and remittance
Cemetery Administration:
- Processing of plot purchases, including preparation of letters to membership regarding plot ownership
- Maintain plot inventory
- Quarterly reconciliation of general ledger accounts to inventory and plot sale records
- Completion of mandatory reporting to the Bereavement Authority of Ontario
- Addressing questions relating to plot purchase, returns and transfers
Membership Renewal:
- Processing of yearly membership renewals
- Preparation of daily statistics during renewal period
- Correspond with members about their contributions and payment arrangements
Tax receipts:
- Assist in preparation and reconciliation of annual tax receipts
- Quarterly creation and distribution of Acknowledgement Letters to charities
Miscellaneous:
- Annual audit – assistance with preparation of working papers and reports
- Annual budget – Assist in spreadsheet analysis of GL accounts & statistics
- Assist in administration of the Canada-Wide Early Learning Child Care (CWELCC) system
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Key Competencies
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field, as well as 2-3 years relevant work experience in AP and AR, ideally in a not-for-profit, synagogue, school, or similar environment
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to complete a high volume of work with a commitment to deadlines while ensuring accuracy and completeness of the information
- Experience with computer software programs utilized by Temple Sinai, including Microsoft Office suite, Adagio, Salesforce/Congregation Connect
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to problem solve, self-motivate and work collaboratively with others
