Job Description

The JSN, in conjunction with a security vendor, is seeking professional and experienced Security Guards for several community campuses located in the Greater Toronto Area.  Selected candidates will be employed by a security guard company and will not be direct employees of the JSN.

This is an active, public-facing security position requiring a high level of situational awareness, professionalism, sound judgment, and communication skills. Security Guards will provide a visible security presence, conduct interior and exterior patrols, monitor CCTV and security systems, respond to incidents, and assist employees, visitors, and members of the community.

The successful candidates must be comfortable working in a community-focused environment and demonstrate strong de-escalation, conflict-resolution, and incident-response skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a professional and visible security presence throughout the property.
  • Conduct regular interior and exterior foot patrols of buildings, grounds, entrances, parking areas, and other designated locations.
  • Monitor CCTV cameras, security monitors, alarms, and access-control systems.
  • Monitor and control access to the property in accordance with established site procedures.
  • Identify and respond to suspicious activity, safety concerns, and unauthorized access.
  • Professionally engage with unauthorized individuals and address unauthorized presence on the property in accordance with site procedures.
  • Use effective verbal communication, de-escalation, and conflict-resolution techniques when responding to challenging or escalating situations.
  • Respond to security incidents, alarms, and emergencies and take appropriate action within the scope of training and site procedures.
  • Where necessary, apply approved Use of Force techniques in accordance with applicable law, company policy, site procedures, and training.
  • Maintain professional and effective working relationships with local police, emergency services, and community safety partners.
  • Respond promptly to requests for security assistance.
  • Complete accurate incident reports, occurrence reports, and daily activity reports.
  • Follow emergency response, evacuation, lockdown, and other site-specific procedures.
  • Provide professional assistance and direction to employees, visitors, and members of the public.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when dealing with sensitive security matters.
  • Perform other security-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Valid Ontario Security Guard Licence.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete and maintain required Use of Force training/certification.
  • Previous security experience is preferred.
  • Experience in a campus, institutional, community, corporate, or other public-facing security environment is an asset.
  • Experience with CCTV, access-control, and alarm-monitoring systems is an asset.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated de-escalation and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during stressful or challenging situations.
  • Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and professional written reports.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a security team.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with law enforcement and emergency services when required.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts on a continental rotation, including days, nights, afternoons, weekends, and statutory holidays as scheduled.

Physical and Working Requirements

The essential duties of this position require regular physical activity. Successful candidates must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods during a 12-hour shift.
  • Conduct frequent foot patrols throughout the campus.
  • Regularly climb and descend stairs.
  • Perform both interior and exterior patrols.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Respond safely and promptly to incidents occurring throughout the property.
  • Perform the physical requirements associated with required security training and approved intervention techniques.

We are looking for Security Guards who demonstrate professionalism, reliability, strong situational awareness, and excellent communication skills.

Successful candidates will be comfortable working in an active community environment, engaging respectfully with a wide range of individuals, identifying potential security concerns, and using de-escalation as the primary approach to managing conflict.

Candidates must also be prepared to respond appropriately to security incidents and exercise good judgment regarding when additional assistance, including police or emergency services, is required.
