TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Position: Hebrew and Jewish Studies Teachers

Organization: Jewish Heritage School at Congregation Habonim of Toronto

Commitment: Sunday mornings, beginning September, 9:30-11:30 plus a teacher training and occasional staff meetings 

Location: 5 Glen Park Ave. 

We’re seeking enthusiastic and innovative teachers to lead mixed-grade classes in learning:

1.       Basic Hebrew such as reading and writing the letters, basic conversation skills

2.       Jewish studies, including prayers, Torah, Israel, history, and stories

3.       Jewish living, including Tikkun Olam and social justice, holidays and rituals, and ethics and values

 

Job Responsibilities

1.       Prepare lessons for classes, with considerations for adapting them for online or in-person         learning, and with diverse learning styles in mind

a.       Please note that classes will likely be mixed grades based on registration, so they may include students in 2 or 3 different grades (ex. a class could be grades 2-4)

2.       Prepare lessons to follow the flow of the school curriculum guidelines which set out learning outcomes

3.       Prepare materials for students, including worksheets and presentations

4.       Facilitate class activities with enthusiasm and positivity

5.       Manage class dynamics, encourage socialization, and handle conflicts

6.       Establish and maintain rapport with students and families

7.       Manage administrative tasks as needed, including communicating with families and taking attendance

8.       Report in on weekly activities to the Director of Education, and maintain regular communication

 

 

Qualifications

1.      Knowledge of the subject matter, both Hebrew and Jewish studies – you do not need to be fluent in Hebrew or an expert in all subjects, but a basic understanding is important in being able to teach and answer questions

2.       Experience in planning creative lessons and activities based on prepared learning outcomes

3.       Experience in teaching and/or facilitating elementary school-aged children

4.       An understanding of creating activities which incorporate various learning styles, and a willingness to put in the effort to meet diverse needs

5.       Ability to manage a group of young people using positive reinforcement, creative facilitation, and conflict resolution when needed

6.       Ability to creatively adapt programming for in-person or online learning, and engage students effectively in both

7.    Comfort using online teaching technology, such as Zoom, including features like screen sharing notebook writing

8.       Excellent communication skills
