Director of Operations and Finance | Neshama Hospice

Location: On-site in the Greater Toronto Area; regular in-person leadership is essential during residence commissioning, opening preparation, and ongoing operations.

Neshama Hospice is creating a first-of-its-kind 12-bed residence grounded in Jewish values and open to all. Our small, deeply connected interdisciplinary team is committed to excellent, human-centred care. Clinicians, care professionals, and operational leaders listen closely, learn from one another, and share responsibility for creating a welcoming end-of-life home where every contribution is visible and valued.

With construction of our 12-bed residence scheduled for completion in early 2027, this is a rare opportunity to help move a new hospice from development through opening and into sustainable operations.

We are seeking a hands-on, strategic Director of Operations and Finance to lead the transition from construction through opening and into sustainable operations. You will build the financial, administrative, facilities, technology, people, and risk-management systems that enable Neshama Hospice to deliver exceptional, holistic end-of-life care.

As a core member of our collaborative leadership team, you will translate vision into the practical systems required to open and operate the residence successfully. Working closely across disciplines, you will establish clear processes, controls, vendor relationships, and accountabilities while remaining ready to solve day-to-day issues directly. You will ensure our finances, facilities, technology, and people operations work together seamlessly so care teams can focus on what matters most.

What You’ll Own

• Finance and Compliance: Build the finance function for opening and ongoing operations, including financial controls, policies, systems, budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, monthly reporting, audit readiness, and compliance with Ministry of Health, Ontario Health, CRA, and funder requirements. Prepare clear financial analysis and presentations for senior leadership and the Board.
• People Operations: Establish the people systems required for opening and ongoing operations, including payroll, benefits administration, HRIS management, workforce scheduling, employment compliance, and scalable administrative processes.
• Facilities, IT, and Opening Readiness: Partner with project and clinical leaders to prepare the residence for opening, establish day-to-day building operations, implement technology and cybersecurity systems, coordinate vendors, and develop emergency-preparedness procedures.
• Procurement and Risk Management: Establish procurement and contract-management practices, negotiate key vendor agreements, secure appropriate insurance, and develop business-continuity and risk-mitigation plans that support a safe and reliable opening.
• Senior Leadership and On-Call Support: Serve as the senior leader accountable or integrated operational and financial readiness, advise the Executive Director and Board on organizational performance and risk, and participate in the leadership on-call rotation supporting 24/7 hospice operations.

• Experienced Operations and Finance Leader: You bring 7+ years of progressive leadership across operations and finance in healthcare, community care, the broader public sector, or a complex non-profit environment. You have helped an organization, program, facility, or major function move from planning into implementation and stable operations.
• Collaborative Systems Builder: You have a proven record of bringing people together to design, implement, and continuously improve cross-functional operational processes. You balance clear standards with openness to new ideas, building systems that teams understand, trust, and strengthen together.
• Hands-On, Adaptable Leader: You are comfortable moving between strategy and execution—developing a multi-year plan, reviewing financial results, negotiating with a vendor, documenting a process, or resolving an urgent on-site issue. You establish priorities in ambiguity, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and know when to build internally, engage external expertise, or simplify.
• Financially and Risk Savvy: You bring deep experience in budgeting, cash-flow management, financial controls, audit preparation, Board reporting, and operational risk management. Experience with non-profit accounting and health-sector reporting requirements is highly preferred.

• Competitive compensation: The salary range is $119,800 to $148,000. Initial placement within the range will reflect the successful candidate’s experience and skills, with opportunities for progression as impact and tenure grow.
