
Communications Co-ordinator– Job Description – Part-time
Organization Description:
City Shul is a progressive Jewish congregation whose leadership and members have created a welcoming, inclusive, innovative, spiritual community whose goal is to enrich the downtown Toronto Jewish community and enliven downtown Jewish life both personally and communally.
Our members come from many backgrounds and hold a variety of viewpoints, but we all share a love for the richness of Judaism with its many facets.
We sing together, struggle over interesting texts together, and search for a meaningful Jewish life in the 21st century together. We are shaping this unique community into a home with many different features so that anyone who shares our vision can find their way in and make a difference.
Your Role:
As Communications Co-ordinator, your role is to promote the shul, both internally and externally, in a positive manner, with co-ordinated messaging across various vehicles: the shul website, the weekly online newsletter and our social media platforms. With input from the rabbi, the Leadership team, and the communications committee, you’ll write copy for all these communications products, create/collect visuals and update them as required, ensuring that they are on brand.
You will support us in our move back to Bloor Street United Church, where we have an innovative partnership that provides shared space.
As a communications professional, you’ll be welcome to provide strategic input regarding communications needs, opportunities, and processes. It is an excellent opportunity to learn and grow as a communicator.
Main Responsibilities:
- Managing City Shul’s social media presence: creating/collecting social media content and visuals; posting according to schedule.
- Writing and editing web and newsletter copy, ensuring consistency of tone, messaging and visual presentation; creating/collecting visuals for these products
- Ensuring that all of City Shul’s communications vehicles are co-ordinated, updated and on brand.
- Monitoring key metrics across the website, newsletter and social platforms; making recommendations based on what is working.
- Identifying new opportunities.
- Offering strategic advice as needed.
- Handling communications tasks with sensitivity, tact and confidentiality.
Requirements:
- 2-3 years of communications experience
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- Familiar with WordPress, Canva, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office
- An understanding of the shifting communications landscape
- Familiarity with social media platforms
- A strong customer service attitude
- Solid time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail
- Eagerness to learn about the congregation and its place in the religious landscape
- Skill at building relationships and collaborating; Willingness to work with people from a variety of backgrounds
- Diplomacy and tact
- Self-motivation
- Flexibility regarding hours, as necessary
Details:
- One-year, part-time contract with potential to become a permanent position
- 20 hours per week
- Reporting to the rabbi
- Salary: $20,000 to $25,000/year
- Location: Virtual with an occasional in-person meeting
