Prof. Joshua Fogel will discuss his work "On the Translation of the Leksikon fun der nayer yidisher literatur, nine volumes, with a bonus volume" in conversation with our Centre's very own Prof. Kalman Weiser.
Professor Joshua Fogel, an expert in Chinese and Japanese history, put aside his mainline scholarly work, more or less, for six or seven years to translate 7100 biographies from the Leksikon fun der nayer yidisher literatur. By putting the entries online, he has made accessible to the English-reading universe an essential reference work about Yiddish literature and culture that was previously little-known outside of experts.
Historian and Yiddish scholar Kalman Weiser will be in conversation with Josh about what motivated him to undertake such a mammoth task, his experience as a translator, and what is to be gained and lost in such an endeavour.
Joshua A. Fogel is a Sinologist, historian, and translator who specializes in the history of modern China, especially on the cultural and political relations between China and Japan. He has held a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair at York University in Toronto since 2005.
