In the entire corpus of Yiddish folk songs, viglider (lullabies) form the largest genre: there are hundreds of lullabies on dozens of themes. Some are well known; many others are not. Miriam Borden explores some lesser-known Yiddish lullabies and suggests the reason this genre has remained so compelling for Yiddish writers, singers, and scholars for generations.
Miriam Borden is a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto and a Lecturer at the University of California Berkeley specializing in Yiddish literature and culture. She teaches courses on Yiddish language, literature, and history, serves as a director of the Toronto Workmen’s Circle Foundation, and is active as a historian of Yiddish in Toronto.
