While perpetrators of discriminatory acts have faced the possibility of hate-crime charges in the
past, they also could face civil-damages lawsuits as well. The torts of assault and battery can be
used to file damages against anyone committing an antisemitic crime, whether for serious
assaults or for more minor acts. Find out how lawyers in the US and in Canada are using tort law
to deter antisemitic acts. Our expert panel will share insights on:
• Determining the best course: reviewing the elements of assault or
battery as they apply to your client’s case
• Seeking compensatory damages: establishing physical, mental, or emotional harm
• Deterring antisemitic acts through punitive and aggravated damages
• When is it worthwhile to seek nominal damages?
