TanenbaumCHAT University Presents
Antisemitism & Modernity:
The Dreyfus Affair
The Dreyfus Affair – the false treason accusation against senior Jewish French military officer Alfred Dreyfus, and its ensuing media and political frenzy -- shocked modern secular Europe because it revealed that antisemitism was still a feature of the state's apparatus. How was the Dreyfus Affair a reflection of the struggle between traditional attitudes and the trends of modern thought? Was Alfred Dreyfus, the secular Jew, the symbol of a changing modern landscape? How did this scandal foreshadow contemporary tensions of the place of the Jew in modern Europe?
The session will be taught by dynamic scholar, teacher and author Dr. Nick Maes, Head of the History Department at TanenbaumCHAT and adjust professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Waterloo.
Two part series: Wednesdays, March 2nd and March 9th, 7:30 p.m. at TCK
