And for the groom a sardine: Sephardic songs from Morocco and Ottoman lands

The Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies and the Department of Music in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design are proud to present Dr. Judith Cohen as part of the year-long performance series “Sound and Sense: Jewish Music @ York”. In “And for the groom a sardine”: Sephardic songs from Morocco and Ottoman lands, Judith brings us songs from her decades collecting songs both as a trained ethnomusicologist and as a folk singer and inveterate traveler. Songs in Ladino/Judeo-Spanish, Galician, Portuguese, Yiddish, Bulgarian, Medieval Occitanian, French and sometimes even in English – with stories of travel and encounters. Judith has taught courses at York University since 1990. She’ll accompany herself on frame drums and medieval bowed vielle, joined by two of Toronto’s favourite musicians: Demetrios Petsalakis (oud, Greek baglama and lyra) and Naghmeh Fahramand (tonbek, daf), and possibly a surprise guest or two.

The McLean Performance Studio is located on the 2nd floor of the Accolade East Building, room 244, just outside York University subway station (line 1 - University).
