Title: Café and Kitchen Aid

Position Summary:
The Café and Kitchen Aid is an essential member of the Food Services team at the Bernard Betel Centre, supporting the day-to-day operations of the kosher kitchen and Café. This role ensures smooth, safe, and welcoming food service while maintaining adherence to kosher dietary laws and health regulations, as guided by the Kashrut Council of Canada. While the primary responsibility is Café service, this role also assists in kitchen and Meals on Wheels operations during quieter time in the Café.
Key Responsibilities:
Café Duties (Primary Focus):
- Open and prepare Café equipment for daily service.
- Ensure food is ready for service.
- Serve customers in a professional, friendly, and respectful manner.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly Café area, including tables and service counters.
- Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system and reconcile cash at the end of day/week.
- Replenish and rotate food supplies using FIFO (first-in, first-out) practices.
- Assist with food preparation and packaging for Café offerings.
- Support catering functions when the Café is not busy.
- Communicate with kitchen staff regarding food needs or shortages.
- Transport dirty dishes to the dishwashing area.
Kitchen Duties:
- Assist with portioning and packaging for the Kosher Meals on Wheels program.
- Support vegetable prep and general food production as required.
- Help set up and maintain Café food service.
- Receive and store deliveries and kitchen supplies.
- Clean and organize kitchen, fridges, freezers, and storage areas.
- Support inventory tracking and kitchen supply management.
- Assist in dishwashing and sanitation of kitchen and cafeteria equipment.
General Duties:
- Provide assistance to seniors, clients, and volunteers as needed.
- Prepare and help clean for Jewish holidays and events in accordance with kashrut guidelines.
- Uphold health, fire safety, and hygiene protocols.
- Occasionally assist with administrative tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Food Services.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and work on your feet for extended periods.
- Familiarity with kitchen equipment and safe food handling practices.
- Training in culinary arts or relevant kitchen/food services experience preferred.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail in food presentation and hygiene.
- Knowledge of kosher food preparation is an asset (training available).
- Basic math skills; ability to manage cash register operations.
- Reliability and ability to work calmly under pressure.
Language Requirements:
- English
- Russian, Hebrew, and or Yiddish an asset
