Reins passed to new WC&A for 2005

Fran Sonshine is the new chair of UJA Federation's Women's Campaign & Advocacy (WC&A).

Outgoing chair Barbara Bregman passed the reins to Sonshine and incoming vice chair Linda Frum at WC&A's recent annual installation following a record-setting year in which WC&A raised close to $7 million and an impressive 60 new Lions of Judah came on board.

The Lion of Judah distinction is given to women who make annual contributions of at least $5,000 to the UJA Federation annual campaign.

After praising the incredible success of the previous executive, Sonshine described her vision for the future. "My goal for Women's Campaign & Advocacy is to engage as many women in our community as possible, so that we can raise our voices about the issues that affect us, our families, and the Jewish world. The more women involved in our work, the more revenue will be generated to deal with today's challenges and in turn help to preserve our Jewish values of Tzedakah and Tikun Olam."

"Together, we raised the money," said Bregman. "Together we advocated for the Jewish community both in Israel and at home. Together we dedicated ourselves to strengthening Jewish life. Together we acted as role models for a future generation of leaders."

The evening's keynote speaker was Bernie Farber, executive director, Canadian Jewish Congress Ontario Region, who addressed the recent antisemitc activity throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

"We must not be cowed by acts of antisemitism in our midst.  "We must use it to galvanize our purpose," said Farber. "We must ensure proper protection for our community and we must move forward in building a fence of protection both for our institutions, our people and our ideals. Ridding the world of antisemitism is an integral part of defending these ideals by all those who cherish and share them."
